Press Release
Milken Institute Launches Master Course on How to Think Like an Emerging Markets Macro Investor

Washington, DC – August 18, 2021 – The Milken Institute today launched a course titled “How to Think Like an Emerging Markets Macro Investor,” a self-paced, on-demand class tailored to emerging markets policymakers, investors, or other individuals looking to navigate the landscape of emerging markets macro investing.

The course responds to the pressing need for emerging and frontier markets to attract more long-term investment into their economies to fuel sustainable, private-sector-led growth and advance progress towards the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. The need for investment is all the more pressing now to help accelerate these countries’ economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

For investors debating whether or not to venture into emerging markets, this master course dives into the opportunities and considerations to keep in mind and unpacks important components of a successful emerging markets investment strategy. For emerging markets policymakers and companies looking to attract that investment, the course provides unprecedented insights into how the world’s leading investors think about the space and ultimately make their investment decisions. As such, this new master course complements other emerging markets training programs developed by the Milken Institute, notably the IFC-Milken Institute Capital Markets Program at George Washington University which is building tomorrow’s financial leaders across more than 40 developing and emerging economies.

“By joining us on this extensive journey, you will see that investing in emerging markets is a rich intellectual challenge,” said Christopher Smart, chief global strategist at Barings and Head of the Barings Investment Institute, and master course instructor. “It can be a lucrative investment strategy, but in addition, there is something fundamentally important about helping bring capital to countries where people are trying to build better lives for themselves.”

Accessible through an online portal, this freely available course features investment strategies and tactics from a select group of leading chief investment officers, chief risk officers, investment bankers, and academics with over a century of cumulative experience in the area and over USD $4.7 trillion in combined assets under management. Instructors include:

  • Jonathan Anderson, Principal & Founder, Emerging Advisors Group

  • Robin Brooks, Chief Economist, The Institute of International Finance

  • Joyce Chang, Chair of Global Research, J.P. Morgan

  • Stefan Dunatov, Former Executive Vice President, Investment Strategy & Risk, British Columbia Investment Management Corporation
