Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of eight emerging and escalating risks to both employee and organizational health and performance that employers face, as identified through a landscape analysis of more than 245 sources from 2011 to 2025, conducted by the Milken Institute Employer Action Exchange (EAE). AI is so pervasive that it intersects with the seven other risks—mental health, talent shortages, economic uncertainty, geopolitical instability, exclusion of people, physical security, and weather events.
The primary paradox of AI is that, although it can accelerate processes, without a human-centered approach, it introduces risks—including the potential for more disruption than progress. The Employer Strategies for Human-Centered AI brief captures insights and actions from an October 2025 EAE-led roundtable, which explored how employers can drive performance through health care policies and programs, organizational culture and well-being, community and business investments, and industry and sector standards. By focusing on listening, transparency, and building trust as organizations implement AI, employers can protect the health, performance, and resilience of their businesses, employees, and communities.
