Since the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel, a new wave of an old evil has emerged in the US and other countries: Antisemitism. A recent survey by the American Jewish Committee indicates that 86 percent of Jewish Americans feel that antisemitism has increased in the US since then, as does 63 percent of the general population, whereas nearly half of young American Jews say they have been personal targets of antisemitism in the last year. In addition to physical violence, such as the attempted assassination by arson of the governor of Pennsylvania, antisemitic hate speech has emerged—from both right and left ends of the political spectrum. What is to be done? In this panel, a group of prominent thinkers and leaders will probe the newly emboldened force of antisemitism, including how American leaders and institutions should respond to the phenomenon—and how they are responding to it. Panelists will discuss how antisemitism has proliferated online, and its relationship to free speech and academic freedom, as well as the ongoing debates about antisemitism’s relationship to anti-Zionism.
