With wide applications in biomedicine and health care, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have the potential to expand our understanding of the risks of specific diseases and their potential therapies at the cellular and systems (or "whole person") levels. The impact of AI-based medical advances will be seen in diverse areas—from predicting preterm birth to diagnosing cancerous skin lesions to fast-tracking the development of drug therapies. Major challenges in the field include identifying datasets with equipoise to diverse populations, developing unbiased algorithms and methods, and deploying AI-assisted methodologies in clinical practice. The panel will focus on the myriad uses of AI in health care—a market forecast to grow from $10.2 billion today to more than $120 billion by 2028.
