Amanda Castel is a Professor of Epidemiology at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University. Dr. Castel is an infectious disease medical epidemiologist whose research focuses on the HIV prevention and care continuum. She joined the faculty of the SPH in 2006 where she was the Chief Epidemiologist for over a decade on a public health-academic partnership with the DC Department of Health HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD, TB Administration. Since then, she has successfully developed a large NIH-funded research portfolio, including as Principal Investigator of the DC Cohort, a longitudinal multi-site cohort of over 11,000 people living with HIV in DC. Prior to joining the Milken Institute SPH in 2006, Dr. Castel completed her training at the CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer at the Maryland Department of Health followed by a Preventive Medicine Residency at the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. Dr. Castel leads the DC Center for AIDS Research Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative and served on the NIH’s AIDS Research Advisory Council. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she has worked with local health departments to conduct case investigations and train epidemiologists and serves as an advisor and consultant to local health departments, schools, universities, and other organizations on safety and mitigation protocols. Dr. Castel holds a BA from Brown University, an MD from the University of Pennsylvania, an MPH from the Johns Hopkins University, and completed her pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
