Paul Wallace is based in Dubai, where he heads Bloomberg's political and economic coverage for the Middle East and Africa. He's reported from more than 25 countries and written extensively about global geopolitics and macroeconomics, as well as financial and energy markets. He now manages around 15 reporters and editors covering everything in the Middle East and Africa from geopolitics to conflicts, elections, monetary policy and economic trends. Since October 2023, his team has overseen Bloomberg's coverage of the war in Gaza and related conflicts between Israel and Iran-backed militants. Paul previously headed Bloomberg's energy and commodities coverage for the Middle East.
He joined Bloomberg in London in 2014 and moved to Lagos, Nigeria the next year to report on African economic, business and political stories. He covered Nigeria's elections in 2015 and 2019 and interviewed Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest person. Paul also wrote about Islamic State's insurgency in West Africa and Nigeria's economic crisis after oil prices plunged in 2014.He's written several articles for Businessweek and interviewed former Barclays CEO Bob Diamond for a Bloomberg Markets magazine profile. Before Bloomberg, Paul worked for The Banker magazine in London, where he was Africa Editor and also wrote about global economics and capital markets.
Born and brought up in Malawi. He read history at Durham University in England, before doing a masters in journalism at the London College of Communication.
