Christy Walton is a philanthropist, entrepreneur, and activist. For the past 45 years, her work has spanned the full bioregion ecosystem demonstrating and catalyzing regenerative relationships between the ocean, land, watersheds, and communities while generating positive economic outcomes.
Christy’s interests are science-based ocean vitality, land and water stewardship, human health, and resilience in the face of climate change with a commitment to place, heritage, and culture. The pace and scale of Christy’s work is focused primarily on the municipality of La Paz, Baja California Sur and the Gulf of California.
Christy’s efforts in ocean health and sustainable blue foods led to integrated investments for the development of submersible offshore aquaculture systems, farmable warmwater finfish species, finfish and shellfish genetics advancements, and species with resistance to climate change. The aquaculture systems are demonstrating a generative ecosystem benefit by creating safe zones for wild fish, while producing jobs and enabling year-round diversified fish production for the market.
Christy’s investments in coastal resilience in an arid peninsula ecosystem led to the development of successful water retention, erosion management, and animal husbandry practices. The resulting groundwater and aquifer recharge as well as increased biomass and biodiversity has garnered the attention of regional, national and international researchers.
Today, Christy continues her work through a collective of organizations called Innovaciones Alumbra or iAlumbra. The iAlumbra Collective includes operating businesses, applied innovation institutes, philanthropy and investments all working to advance the vision of a world in which community, environment, and economy function as an integrated system for well-being.
