Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat is an Egyptian international economist, who served for eight years (2018-2026) as Minister across three key portfolios: Tourism, International Cooperation, and Planning, Economic Development & International Cooperation. Her previous roles include Senior Economist and then Advisor to the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund, and Sub-Governor for Monetary Policy at the Central Bank of Egypt.
With more than 25 years of international experience, Al-Mashat’s expertise spans macroeconomic policy, economic development, international cooperation, climate finance, sustainability and monetary policy frameworks. She is a co-founder and member of several advisory boards and international alliances, including in the United Nations, Generation Unlimited, Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, World Economic Forum and more; championing multilateralism and partnerships as catalysts for economic growth, climate action, and more. She represented Egypt as Governor in several global multilateral development banks and managed international partnerships, ensuring effective alignment of development finance across sectors while promoting greater private sector participation. She also developed Egypt’s Country Platform for the Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy (NWFE) to accelerate the green transition and mobilize climate finance, specifically to the private sector. Al-Mashat served on several boards, including the Egyptian Stock Exchange, the Egyptian General Authority for Free Zones and Investment, the Arab International Bank, and the Arab Investment Bank, among others.
Moreover, Al-Mashat has several publications in international cooperation, development and climate finance, monetary policy, financial stability, and institutional reforms. She also led the conceptualization and coordination of “Egypt's Narrative for Comprehensive Development: Reforms for Growth, Jobs & Resilience", the country's new growth model that extends beyond macroeconomic stability and fiscal sustainability to integrate human development and social justice as core pillars of Egypt’s economic transformation.
