Hebru Brantley

Founder and Owner, Hebru Brand Studios
Hebru Brantley is an American contemporary artist whose work explores identity, agency, and resilience through a distinct visual language rooted in Chicago’s South Side. Raised in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood, Brantley emerged from the city’s street art and graffiti scene in the 1990s, where he developed a narrative-driven practice responding directly to urban life, history, and community. Drawing from pop culture, comic-book mythology, and Afrofuturist thought, Brantley is best known for creating Flyboy, a recurring protagonist within his broader concept of “dark fiction.” Through this evolving mythology, his work reimagines heroism by centering people of color as complex, empowered figures navigating vulnerability, responsibility, and hope. His practice reflects a deep engagement with Chicago’s cultural legacy while addressing universal questions of power, imagination, and self-determination. Brantley has presented exhibitions and public installations in Chicago, New York, Miami, Tokyo, and Hong Kong, among other cities, and his work is held in prominent public and private collections. His immersive installation Nevermore Park further established his commitment to experiential storytelling and community-centered artmaking. While maintaining strong ties to Chicago, Brantley continues to expand his multidisciplinary practice, including directing and developing film and television projects that extend his visual narratives into new mediums.
