Part 1: A Conversation with President of the World Bank David Malpass | Part 2: The New World (Dis-) Order?

October 19 at 8:30 am PDT/11:30 am EDT

This session will open with a conversation with David Malpass, President, World Bank Group, followed by a panel discussion.

It's no secret that the post-cold war international order has come under increasing strain in recent years. The rise of multipolar power, in particular the reemergence of China, has raised systemic questions of strategic stability as well as global economic governance. The dislocating effects of globalization, accelerated by technology, have fueled nationalist populist movements within democracies as well as the reemergence of authoritarian, non-democratic forms of governance around the world. International institutions struggle to keep pace and adapt. Perhaps counterintuitively, with the twin crises of the pandemic and the economic downturn facing the world, 2020 may represent—for those able to influence events—a historic opportunity to create more functional and equitable institutions. This panel will examine the challenges confronting global leaders: Decisions they make today are likely to shape the world for decades to come.
