Jaelyn, age 17, is a passionate advocate and voice for children and teens impacted by younger-onset dementia. She lives in Maryland with her parents and has two older sisters who live outside the home. Her journey began in 2020 when her dad was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s, a shocking moment that left her feeling isolated and without peers who could truly understand what she was going through.
Jaelyn was first connected to Lorenzo’s House through a trusted friend and the YES! group, and she quickly became an important part of the community. She is a regular participant in the Teen Light Club and, in 2024, she stepped into the role of Youth Summit Emcee, leading with grace, authenticity, and light. She has also shared her caregiving story and insights through speaking engagements with Lorenzo’s House, including a feature on the WillGather podcast.
In her own words:
“As a daughter to a father living with younger-onset dementia, I understand how isolating and complicated things can be—and how hard it is to find peers who understand. Lorenzo’s House shifts the narrative and is a beacon of hope for sons and daughters like me. We carry stories—unique stories that only we understand—and we need each other on our way through.”
Jaelyn is a high school student in a Health Professions Magnet Program and hopes to become a Nurse Practitioner in Med-Surge, with a special interest in neurological sciences inspired by her dad’s diagnosis. Alongside her academic goals, she has a lifelong love of the arts, including ballet and music.
Her caregiving journey has taught her patience, presence, and the importance of making intentional memories. While her dad’s abilities have gradually changed, she continues to find ways to connect with him through mindfulness and care.
Jaelyn’s voice brings visibility to young carers who are often unseen. By sharing her story, she not only empowers herself but also lights the way for other children and teens navigating a parent’s diagnosis.
