James MacKenzie

James MacKenzie currently serves as Chair of the Victorian Funds Management Corporation. With over AUD$80 billion (USD$53billion) in funds under management, VFMC is a public authority responsible for investing for the benefit of the Australian State of Victoria. A Chartered Accountant by profession, James was a Partner in both the Melbourne and Hong Kong offices of an international accounting firm now part of Deloitte. James lived in Hong Kong where he worked in the accounting profession and investment banking. He worked on assignments in Asia, the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. He was responsible for the establishment of the firm’s China desk in 1984 and, as a delegate of the Hong Kong Society of Accountants, attended the first Accountants Congress held in the Peoples Republic of China in 1985. James was responsible for the firm’s early development activities in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Well versed in Australia’s commercial relationship with Asia, he has been a regular traveller to China and its two Special Administrative Regions: Hong Kong and Macau. During 1997-2001 James was the Managing Director of Funds Management and Insurance at the ANZ Banking Group and the Chief Executive Officer of Norwich Union Australia. James led the transformation of the Victorian Government’s Personal Injury Schemes initially as Chief Executive Officer of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) from 1994-97 and later as Chairman of the TAC and the Victorian WorkCover Authority (WorkSafe Victoria) from 2000-2007.
