
For decades, Hollywood and the entertainment industry have served as a core component of the California economy, as well as a key economic and cultural export for the United States. But as costs have risen and more productions are moved abroad, the economics of entertainment have shifted. Revenues have become more uncertain; skilled workers are leaving the business, leaving entertainment employment in the LA County at its lowest in 30 years. Added to this, the industry has battled two years of actual and potential labor unrest. In a new world, how can industry leaders, unions, and policymakers return Hollywood to economic stability and make working in Hollywood a dream job, rather than a nightmare that many have chosen to flee?
