Breaking from the Status Quo: How Philanthropy Is Challenging Outdated Systems

October 18 at 2:00 pm PDT / 5:00 pm EDT

While talent may be equally distributed, opportunity is not. A person's Zipcode or neighborhood can make the difference between good and poor health outcomes, determine access to high-quality education, and so much more. Philanthropy can support efforts to dismantle entrenched systems of inequity, but to be truly transformative, it must be brave enough to shift power into the hands of the communities themselves. This is why some high-capacity philanthropists invest in grassroots organizing and advocacy at the hyper-local level. Others find value in leveraging risk capital to innovate or support emerging talent in the social sector. This session will explore how philanthropists have structured investments to create lasting change and ensure that a person's destiny is no longer tied to their geography.
