John Wigneswaran
John Wigneswaran (Wig), MD, is the chief operating officer for the American Medical Association (AMA), overseeing business operations, health solutions, information technology, AMA Insurance, and JAMA Publishing, as well as providing executive leadership for new ventures and innovation initiatives for the nation’s largest physician organization.
Wig joined the AMA after holding C-suite executive positions at Walmart, Optum Rx, Cigna/Express Scripts, DaVita, and Fresenius Medical Care, where he held roles leading core business operations across payer, provider, pharmaceutical, and retail sectors. He brings deep expertise in clinical quality, operations, business development, capital allocation, corporate governance, strategic partnerships, and enterprise transformation. He also has over a decade of clinical experience as a practicing nephrologist and currently serves on the board of the American Diabetes Association.
Wig received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University, attended medical school at the Tufts University School of Medicine, and completed his internal medicine residency at Rhode Island Hospital/Brown University and nephrology fellowship at New York-Presbyterian/Weil Cornell Medical Center. He received his MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management.
