President and Chief Investment Officer, Liberty Mutual Investments
Vlad Barbalat is President and Chief Investment Officer of Liberty Mutual Investments (LMI), the investment firm for Liberty Mutual Group. In this role, he oversees the company’s investments business and serves as a member of the Liberty Mutual executive leadership team. Vlad joined LMI in 2017 as the Head of Investment Strategy and was later promoted to Co-head of Strategy and Asset Allocation, followed by President and Chief Investment Officer in 2021.
Prior to LMI, Vlad was Chief Investment Officer for GMO’s flagship Global Macro hedge fund and was a senior member of the firm’s Asset Allocation committee. He began his career as an analyst at Goldman Sachs in 2003, where he held several leadership positions across proprietary investing businesses and the broader Securities Division franchise over his 13-year tenure.
Vlad is member of the International Council of the Belfer Center at the Kennedy School, Harvard University and a permanent member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is also a serving member on the Board of the JFK Presidential Library Foundation, Boston and is a committee member on the investment committees for Mass General Brigham (MGB) and the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE). Vlad earned dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Finance and Information Systems, graduating summa cum laude from New York University’s Stern School of Business in 2003, and completed his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 2006.
