David Kershenobich Stalnikowitz

Secretary of Health, Mexico

David Kershenobich was appointed Secretary of Health by President Claudia Sheinbaum in October 2024.

He is a medical doctor who graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He completed his residency in internal medicine and gastroenterology at the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán (INCMNSZ).

Kershenobich further specialized in Hepatology at the Royal Free Hospital in London, under the mentorship of Professor Dame Sheila Sherlock, and earned a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of London.

He is a pioneer in clinical research on hepatitis C and liver fibrosis in Mexico, with a publication record that includes 249 original articles, 8 books, and 114 book chapters.

He holds the title of Level III Emeritus Researcher in the National System of Researchers. Served on the Governing Board of UNAM from 2005 to 2012 and was the President of the National Academy of Medicine of Mexico from 2010 to 2012.

Additionally, he was the Secretary of the General Health Council during 2011–2012. At the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán, he was the head of the Department of Gastroenterology and served as the Director General from 2012 to 2022.

Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards, including the "Eduardo Liceaga" Medal from the General Health Council of the Government of Mexico, an honorary doctorate from UNAM, and the 2016 National Science Award in the field of Physical-Mathematical and Natural Sciences. He was also a member of the Advisory Council of the National Human Rights Commission from March 2016 to March 2021.
