Vlad Barbalat

President, Global Risk and Capital Solutions and Chief Investment Officer, Liberty Mutual Group

Vlad Barbalat is President of Global Risk & Capital Solutions and Chief Investment Officer of Liberty Mutual Group. In this role, Vlad leads Global Risk Solutions (GRS) and Liberty Mutual Investments (LMI) — the company's commercial and specialty insurance, reinsurance, and investment management businesses. GRS ranks among the world's largest platforms of its kind, writing $23 billion in gross written premium across 24 countries, while LMI deploys more than $124 billion in long-term capital across public and private markets globally. He is a member of Liberty Mutual's executive leadership team.

Vlad joined LMI in 2017 as the Head of Investment Strategy, was appointed President and Chief Investment Officer in 2021, and assumed his current role in 2026. Prior to LMI, Vlad was Chief Investment Officer for GMO’s flagship Global Macro hedge fund and was a senior member of the firm’s Asset Allocation committee. He began his career as an analyst at Goldman Sachs in 2003, where he held several leadership positions across proprietary investing businesses and the broader Securities Division franchise over his 13-year tenure.

Vlad is a member of the International Council of the Belfer Center at the Kennedy School, Harvard University, a permanent member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and serves on the investment committees for Mass General Brigham (MGB). Vlad earned dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Finance and Information Systems, graduating summa cum laude from New York University’s Stern School of Business in 2003, and completed his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 2006.
