Jens Ludwig

Jens Ludwig is the Edwin A. and Betty L. Bergman Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago, Pritzker director of the University of Chicago Crime Lab, non-resident senior fellow in economic studies at the Brookings Institution, co-director of the National Bureau of Economic Research working group on the economics of crime, and director of a new research center, the Bike Shop @ UChicago, designed to deploy algorithms to improve social conditions at scale. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, a member of the Committee on Law and Justice of the National Academy of Sciences, and author of “Unforgiving Places: The Unexpected Origins of American Gun Violence” (University of Chicago Press, 2025), which was named one of the New Yorker’s Best Books of 2025.
