Milken Institute Statement of Support for Legislative Efforts to Modernize Clinical Trials and Accelerate Cures

The Milken Institute is pleased to see the introduction of the Faster Clinical Trials Act to make clinical trials more accessible in the United States. This bill comes at a critical time for the United States to sustain its leadership in biomedical innovation.  Investment in clinical trials and research leads to breakthroughs in health, drives strong economic growth, and maintains our national security.

“The FasterCures team at the Milken Institute has been working for over two decades on how to accelerate biomedical progress for patients. We share the goals of the Faster Clinical Trials Act—to help the United States run trials faster, reach more Americans everywhere, including in rural areas, and remain a premier destination for clinical research,” said Esther Krofah, executive vice president of Health for the Milken Institute.

Our most recent report, Enabling Access to Clinical Research: An Action Plan for Policy and Practice Change, outlines the adjustments needed across the clinical research ecosystem to make trials more patient-centered and embedded in care. To achieve these goals, we have recognized the need for increased capacity in clinical trial networks, workforce training, data and technology, and infrastructure across sites. These insights informed our broader Future of US Biomedical Research and Innovation Initiative, launched last year, which calls for federal-level coordination and a national clinical trials agenda as part of a national life sciences strategy. Our recent brief, Imperatives for United States Clinical Research Leadership and Coordination, builds a case for stronger federal leadership to safeguard US competitiveness.

The Milken Institute applauds US Representatives Jake Auchincloss and Morgan Griffith for addressing the barriers that have made it increasingly difficult to conduct early-stage and later-stage clinical development in the US and for their efforts to ensure more Americans can participate in clinical trials. We appreciate the changes in this legislation and look forward to continuing to work with Congress and the administration to inform efforts to modernize clinical trials, accelerate cures, and sustain US leadership in biomedical innovation.
