Global Conference 2022

Strengthening Democracy in the 21st Century

In the last year democracies of the West watched Russia invade Ukraine and the Taliban's forces capture Kabul. As authoritarian regimes attempt to spread and reinstate rule, it brings into question the conditions that have enabled bad actors to exert control. How can democratic nations and alliances push back their influence and set the stage for more stable democracies in the future? While democratic countries focus on spreading their values abroad, they cannot take for granted their citizens' trust in institutions and faith in the democratic process. The spread and accessibility of misinformation has shined a light on the role of media and consumption of information in shaping societal values at home and abroad. This panel will address tensions between democratic and authoritarian values, how global leaders are rethinking alliances, and what it all means for the future of democracy.
