FasterCures, a Center of the Milken Institute, created this guide to support the use of its Research Partnership Maturity Model (RPMM) by research-focused patient organizations and other biomedical organizations that interact with them. The RPMM is meant to be a practical tool to enable patient organizations that support or conduct research to (1) understand their assets and capabilities as research partners and (2) chart a path forward for growth in their ability to advance research. FasterCures first proposed the RPMM in a series of white papers titled “Advancing Models of Patient Engagement: Patient Organizations as Research and Data Partners.” A diverse group of patient organizations and other biomedical organizations provided input on the overall utility of this model and the model framework and contents. This guide will provide the following:

  • A detailed description of the dimensions and elements of the RPMM

  • Considerations for how the RPMM might be used by patient organizations and their partners

  • Examples of how the RPMM mirrors real-world growth at research-focused patient organizations
