Science Philanthropy Accelerator for Research and Collaboration (SPARC)

Neuroscience

Milken Institute Philanthropy’s neuroscientists are experts in their field, working alongside donors to navigate the research landscape. Together, with our partners, SPARC experts identify the areas where philanthropy can be the force that brings together diverse perspectives from across disciplines and sectors, unlocks the areas where progress has stalled, and strives for better diagnostics and treatments for conditions that affect the brain.

Philanthropic Investment for Brain Health

Our brains hold the essence of who we are: our memories, personalities, feelings, as well as the keys to the way our bodies work. There are more than 600 diseases that affect the brain—and every one of them can change how our bodies function and/or how we understand ourselves. Each of these diseases is unique and complex, and together, they impact the lives of one in every six people around the world. Illnesses of the brain range from mental health conditions such as depression and bipolar disorder to neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, and lesser-known conditions such as misophonia.

Due to the complexity of this vital human organ, brain conditions can be notoriously difficult to diagnose and treat. To better understand these complexities and address gaps in science’s understanding of the brain, ensuring brain research is adequately and strategically funded is of utmost importance.
