With more than 30 years of leadership at the highest levels of both the public and private sectors, The Honorable Douglas A. Smith serves as Global Head of Public Affairs and Managing Director for the Middle East and North Africa at The Nuclear Company, America’s fleet-scale nuclear deployment platform. In this role, Smith oversees the company’s international government relations, public affairs strategy, and regional expansion across the Middle East, North Africa, and Southeast Asia — championing clean, safe, and sustainable nuclear energy solutions.
Smith joined The Nuclear Company from Orchard Global, a premier international alternative asset manager, where he served as Global Head of Public Affairs. In that role, he advised the firm’s leadership and investment teams on geopolitical risk, strategic communications, and the intersection of national security, investment, and global financial stability, helping the firm navigate an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape across its global portfolio.
From 2009 to 2015, Smith served as Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, having been appointed by President Barack Obama, advising the Secretary and the President on the global impact of the Department’s policies, regulations, and processes on millions of private-sector companies, universities and not-for-profit institutions. Smith spearheaded the interagency launch of the Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, and APEC Business Travel Card trusted-traveler programs.
