The mainstream adoption of decarbonization solutions is still a work in progress. The voluntary carbon market plays a crucial role in bridging the divide between the needed and actual carbon footprint. It also provides emerging markets and developing economies with a path to monetize their natural capital, by providing nature-based solutions. Carbon credits are an impactful solution to protect our public goods—the planet’s carbon sinks and biodiversity. In this collaborative discussion, stakeholders including project originators, verifiers, investors, and industry thought leaders will discuss recent developments—in the policy landscape, technological innovations, and recent investments. We will identify areas where guidelines need to be strengthened or reworked to reinforce the credibility and reliability of carbon credits. The goal is to ensure carbon credits are a trusted asset in investment portfolios while benefiting local stakeholders—incorporating both financial returns and the environmental and social impact.
