Mark Smolinski, MD, MPH is president of Ending Pandemics, which was spun out from the Skoll Global Threats Fund in 2018 to provide scientific expertise and funding to find outbreaks faster. With three-decades’ experience fighting outbreaks across five continents, Smolinski has served as epidemic intelligence officer with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), senior advisor to the U.S. Surgeon General, and study director at the National Academies of Sciences. He also joined the founding team at Google.org to focus on data-based approaches to detecting pandemic threats. He was recently named to serve on the Standing Committee on Emerging Infectious Diseases and 21st Century Health Threats, under direction of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine. Smolinski received his BS in Biology and MD from the University of Michigan. He is board-certified in preventive medicine and public health and holds an MPH from the University of Arizona, where he was recognized as the 2016 Alumnus of the Year. Mark was on the investigation team that discovered hantavirus, a newly identified pathogen, in 1993.
