Claudia Ruiz Massieu was elected to the Mexican Senate in 2018, where she is Chair of the Special Committee on the USMCA Implementation, and a member of the Committees on Foreign Affairs, North America, Energy, Culture, Constitutional Affairs, and Justice. Senator Ruiz Massieu served as Minister of Foreign Affairs (2015 – 2017), Minister of Tourism (2012 – 2015). Prior to these positions, she was appointed Head of Human Rights and Transparency in President Enrique Peña Nieto’s transition team (2012). She also served as a congresswoman in the Chamber of Deputies from 2003 to 2006 and from 2009 to 2012. As a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Senator Ruiz Massieu held leadership positions, both as Secretary-General (2017-2018) and National Chair (2018-2019). For the 2018 presidential campaign, she was appointed General Coordinator for Migration Affairs. Senator Ruiz Massieu has been awarded the National Order of Merit, at the rank of Grand Officer by the Government of France; The Order of the British Empire, at the rank of Lady Commander by the Government of the United Kingdom, and The Order of Isabella the Catholic at the rank of Great Cross by the Government of Spain, among others. She is an active member of the Mexican Council of Foreign Affairs (COMEXI), the Aspen Institute Mexico, the International Women´s Forum, México, and Mexico’s National Institute of Public Administration (INAP). She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from Universidad Iberoamericana and a Master’s Degree in Comparative Public Policy from FLAC.
