The Scope and Importance of Translational Science

In a TRAIN workshop held on May 9, 2022, in coordination with the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), FasterCures examined approaches to accelerate translational research, the expertise needed to move good ideas toward proof of concept and into the clinic, and how foundations can strategically engage in this process.

In this session, we discuss the translational process and highlight common roadblocks in both preclinical research and clinical implementation. Emphasis is placed on demonstrating there are two broad areas where foundations can help support the work – developing a treatment and ensuring the treatment reaches patients. Foundations should begin to use the knowledge gained from this session to examine their areas of strength and opportunities for their contributions to have the greatest impact.

Speakers:

  • Kristin Schneeman, Senior Director, FasterCures, Milken Institute

  • Joni Rutter, Acting Director, National Center for Accelerating Translational Science (NCATS), National Institutes of Health

  • Matthew Hall, Director, Early Translation Branch, Division of Preclinical Innovation, NCATS
