Yuriko Koike

Governor of Tokyo; Former Member, House of Representatives of Japan, Tokyo's 10th District

Yuriko Koike is the Governor of Tokyo, Japan. Elected in July 2016, her mandate is to make Tokyo a Safe city, a Diverse City, and a Smart City which embraces the world and is a leader in the fields of the environment and finance. During her term as Environment Minister from 2003 to 2006, her “Cool Biz” campaign, known for promoting casual dressing during summer to save power by reducing the need for air conditioning, was widely supported and adopted around Japan. Governor Koike has almost 27 years of experience in public service, including being Minister of the Environment, Chairperson of General Council of the Liberal Democratic Party, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister for National Security Affairs, and most recently, the Director of Committee on Budget of the House of Representatives. Along with being the first female to serve as Governor of Tokyo, she was also the first female to serve as the Defense Minister in July 2007. Ms. Koike holds a BA in Sociology from Cairo University, and is fluent in English and Arabic.
