Randi Weingarten

Randi Weingarten is president of the 1.7 million-member American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO, which represents educators and school-related personnel; higher education faculty and staff; healthcare professionals; and government employees. The AFT and its members are dedicated to advancing social justice through community engagement, collective action and political activism. Weingarten believes in uniting the interests of union members and those they serve in pursuit of solutions that benefit students, schools and communities. Weingarten has launched major initiatives, including: the AFT Innovation Fund, a groundbreaking initiative to support improvement projects developed by members and their local unions; Share My Lesson, the United States' largest free collection of educational resources created by educators, for educators; a partnership with nearly 100 partners to transform McDowell County, W.Va.; and a partnership with First Book that has distributed 5 million free and reduced-price books to children. Before becoming AFT president, Weingarten was president of the United Federation of Teachers in New York City for 12 years, a labor lawyer, and a history teacher at Clara Barton High School.
