Urjit Ravindra Patel

Vice President of Investment Region 1, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank

Patel oversees all sovereign and nonsovereign operations in South Asia, the Pacific Islands and South East Asia for the entire investment cycle from identification, preparation to implementation. He also has joint oversight with the VP for Investment Operations (Region 2) over the Social Infrastructure, Operational Services, and Implementation Monitoring departments. From 2016-2018, Patel was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, after serving as its Deputy Governor from 2013-2016. He has extensive experience in various infrastructure sectors, having served as President (Business Development) at Reliance Industries Limited from 2007-2011 and Executive Director and member of the Management Committee of the Infrastructure Development Finance Company Ltd. from 1997-2006. He recently served as independent director in various publicly listed private-sector corporations. Patel received his Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University. In 2019 he was awarded the Wilbur Cross Medal by Yale University. He is also an Honorary Fellow of Linacre College, University of Oxford. From 2009-2012 he was a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, Washington, D.C. He has authored scholarly publications and papers in the areas of public finance, infrastructure, regulatory economics, monetary policy, global financial safety net, economics of climate change and theory of international trade. Patel is from India.
