
The signing of the executive order calling for the establishment of a US Sovereign Wealth Fund has led to much excitement and uncertainty. While potential abounds for the fund to serve in promotion of both economic prosperity and statecraft, choices about the fund’s structure and strategies will help determine its success. Where the resources to establish the fund originate and how questions of governance and independence are settled will also be vital to creating and sustaining the degree of political consensus likely needed for the project to succeed in the U.S. context. For better or worse, the United States is a late adopter in the space; across the country over 20 states have some version of a fund—as do 90+ countries around the world. This panel will discuss the lessons from around the world that should be considered when establishing and managing a sovereign wealth fund today.
