In January 2020, the United States set a new record for the longest economic expansion in its history. Yet, even before the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic downturn, the record rising tide had not lifted all boats across California's economic landscape. Many communities were still feeling the long-term effects of the last recession and a disproportionate share of economic growth was captured by a few individuals and institutions. Looking toward a post-pandemic future, now is the time for leaders in the nation's most innovative state to reflect on the type of economy we hope to build for our shared future prosperity. This session will engage state leaders in a discussion about how we can tackle our communities' most pressing issues in housing, healthcare, education, and jobs. What are the greatest challenges and opportunities revealed by the experience of COVID-19? Can we develop a collaborative recovery plan that curbs systemic inequities? And can California create a model for national policies that support greater equality of opportunity?
