Today, one in every 78 people on earth have been forced to leave their home—the highest number on record—because of political persecution, conflict, violence, or climate change. For many others, the lack of housing and public services threatens their ability to secure shelter and stay rooted in their communities. For some, foreign imprisonment has challenged the tangibility of home, in many cases necessitating diplomatic negotiations to return sentenced persons to their own countries. While these circumstances each present both short- and long-term challenges, all prompt the same important question: What does it mean to be “at home”?
