Reports and Resources

Infrastructure, Readiness, and Resilience: CSP released the final report in our series Giving Smarter in the Age of COVID-19. The authors show the investments donors can make to ensure the world is better prepared for the next time a health crisis like the one we are experiencing hits. Visit our COVID-19 resource page for the series and a continually updated hub for individuals looking to mitigate the immediate and long-term effects of the crisis.

Bipolar Disorder Research: CSP, together with philanthropic partners, have been working to motivate action and investments to advance research into bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a somewhat common but disruptive illness of the brain, marked by intense shifts in mood and energy levels. Our Giving Smarter Guide outlines the state of the bipolar research field and offers recommendations for donors to advance progress. In addition, we are working with the Baszucki Brain Research Fund to invite PhD and MD-level investigators leading research to advance treatment for people living with bipolar.

Interdisciplinary Science Fellowships: There are many complex challenges in the world needing to be solved. Bringing multiple fields of study together to make these advancements would help the world go further, faster—and interdisciplinary fellowships are one of the most effective ways to achieve this. Learn more about how philanthropy can support cross-disciplinary collaboration by funding scientific fellowships.

Type 1 Diabetes: Once commonly called juvenile diabetes, T1D affects people of all ages and causes lifelong health consequences. Screening for T1D autoantibodies, especially in childhood, would improve the chances of an early diagnosis and help patients and their families manage the condition. Widespread adoption of preventive care, however, can be a challenge. CSP, together with the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, have laid out a roadmap for implementation that could improve millions of lives every year. This report is paired with an Overview of Pediatric Preventive Health Care in the United States to help philanthropists understand how decisions in pediatric preventive medicine are made.

Tools for Philanthropists

• The Philanthropy Commons: Launched in fall 2020 with pilot funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, this platform for collaboration is a vehicle for philanthropists who want to meet and collaborate with like-minded funders and maximize the impact of their investments. Are you a donor interesting in joining? Contact us for more information.

Philanthropy Field Guide: Every stage of a donor’s philanthropic journey has challenges and opportunities. While there are resources to help, there is almost too much information to sift through. In the early stages, there are many strategic considerations and startup decisions to make. For experienced philanthropists, it can be difficult to learn how to measure impact or understand what impacts matter. The Field Guide is designed to cut through the swell of available information. It is a free, regularly updated resource, so check back from time to time, or contact CSP with questions.
