James McGregor is the author of One Billion Customers: Lessons from the Front Lines of Doing Business in China, as well as Founding Partner of BlackInc China, LLC, an advisory firm specializing in cross-border investing, business development, and mergers and acquisitions involving Chinese and American Internet technology. A journalist-turned-businessman who has lived in Beijing for 15 years, McGregor became The Wall Street Journal's China bureau chief in 1989. From 1994 to 2000, he was chief executive of Dow Jones & Co. in China and a vice president in the Dow Jones International Group. He was a pioneer of the Chinese Internet, serving as an adviser to many Chinese Internet startups and as a board member of Sohu.com during the company's Nasdaq listing. His book, One Billion Customers: Lessons from the Front Lines of Doing Business in China, has become the bible for navigating the often treacherous waters of Chinese deal making, with street-smart strategies for succeeding in the world's fastest-growing consumer market. McGregor earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Minnesota.
