Jeff Hunts is the Supervisor for the Electronic Waste Recycling Program for the California Integrated Waste Management Board. Hunts joined the board after the enactment of the landmark California Integrated Waste Management Act, which mandated a 50 percent reduction in the state's waste disposal rates. Since 2001, he has focused on electronic waste-management issues, with the past two years dedicated to implementing California's Electronic Waste Recycling Act, the first of its kind in the nation. In its first year of operation, the program grew to include nearly 400 authorized collectors of covered electronic waste, 40 of whom are authorized recyclers handling more than 65 million pounds of material and generating more than $30 million in claims to the state. In addition to an early emphasis in organic waste and composting, Hunts supervised several key programs, including the California Materials Exchange, the Waste Reduction Awards Program, the Waste Prevention Information Exchange and Reuse Assistance Grants. Prior to joining the board, he spent three years as a solid-waste planner with Malcolm Pirnie Inc. Hunts earned a bachelor's degree in political economy of natural resources at the University of California, Berkeley.
