Wesley Clark, a presidential candidate in 2004, served 34 years in the Army, where he rose to the rank of four-star general as NATO′s Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. Clark commanded Operation Allied Force, NATO′s first major combat action, which saved 1.5 million Albanians from ethnic cleansing in Kosovo; he was also responsible for peacekeeping operations in Bosnia. Previously, Clark served as commander-in-chief, U.S. Southern Command, responsible for U.S. military activities in Latin America and the Caribbean. Awards and honors include the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor; the State Department's Distinguished Service Award; the Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal; the Army's Distinguished Service Medal; the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart; and honorary knighthoods from Britain and the Netherlands. Clark is the author of Waging Modern War: Bosnia, Kosovo, and the Future of Combat and Winning Modern Wars: Iraq, Terrorism, and the American Empire. He graduated top of his class from the U.S. Military Academy and earned a master's degree at the University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.
