According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, we are now entering the "third wave" of the nation's opioid crisis, which involves staggering trends related to fentanyl and the global drug-trafficking trade. It is clear that these rises in illegal global drug activity aggressively diminish our nation's efforts to prevent substance abuse and protect our communities. How can the intersection of public safety and public health efforts proactively decrease the supply and demand for dangerous, illegal drugs in our communities? This panel will evaluate how drug trafficking and money laundering are fueling this crisis, while detailing the various approaches public-health officials are taking in our communities to reduce opioid misuse and save lives.
