The health of the US body politic has become a subject of debate around the world. Externally, the geopolitical landscape is being reshaped around a new relationship with China and in the face of intensifying competition to lead the next phase of the global fourth iteration of the Industrial Revolution. Internally, US domestic politics has become more contested. Concerns over the nation's ability to bridge its long-term political, racial, and social divides are resurfacing. Some Americans perceive the aspirations of the American Dream—freedom and opportunity for all—as an ideal that is irrelevant to them. Is the international strength of the US threatened by its domestic turbulence? Could growing income inequality and the failure to make best use of human capital limit American success in the 21st century? Is there room to renew the American Dream for a new generation?
