The COVID-19 Origin Story: Examining the Wildlife Trade and Preventing Future Pandemics
8:00 AM - 9:00 AM
The majority of new and emerging human infectious diseases are zoonotic diseases, originating from animals including Dengue fever, avian influenza, and Ebola. However, the human and economic toll of the COVID pandemic has brought into focus the need to holistically address the intersection between wildlife trade, wildlife consumption, human wildlife conflict, and public health at national and international levels. In addition to dealing with an unprecedented spike in wildlife trade and crime, global ecosystem loss and degradation due population growth and development is on the rise, bringing humans closer than ever to animals breaking down barriers and increasing the chance that spillover of diseases occurs. This session will explore actions that can be taken across sectors to strike a balance between sustainable development, biodiversity, traditional and cultural practices, food security, and public health in order to prevent the next global pandemic.
