Philanthropists are passionate supporters of health-related causes that range from mental health, to well-being, to medical research, to patient engagement, and more. Many of these problems seem intractable and daunting. Behavioral science provides deep insights into how humans behave, and it offers fresh approaches for examining social challenges and building new and effective solutions. As part of the Center for Strategic Philanthropy's Roll Up Your Sleeves Philanthropy Workshop series, this session will introduce participants to core insights from behavioral science and offer a few case studies—focused on community and individual health—that demonstrate how these concepts can be applied to a social-change agenda. Hands-on instruction and audience participation will facilitate learnings on how to use the science to define (or redefine) the problems that philanthropists wish to address. Participants will leave the workshop with a different perspective on human decisions and behavior, and they will begin to define their philanthropic priorities with a behavioral-science lens.
