Gene Sperling is former director of the National Economic Council at the White House. He's the only person to have served in that role for two presidents (Bill Clinton and Barack Obama). Sperling was a key budget negotiator and White House point person on many issues, including GSE reform, housing, patent reform, manufacturing innovation, small business, tax reform, college opportunity, long-term unemployment and ConnectEd. He also served as senior counselor to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner during the financial crisis. In the Clinton White House, Sperling played a lead role in the 1993 Deficit Reduction Act, the 1997 Bipartisan Balanced Budget Act, the China World Trade Organization agreement and policies including the new markets tax credit and the earned income tax credit expansion. He was also the founder and director of the Center for Universal Education and is the author of "What Works in Girls' Education: Evidence and Policies from the Developing World" and "The Pro-Growth Progressive: An Economic Strategy for Shared Prosperity."
