New Report: The Impact of Insight

As screening technologies advance and detect cancer earlier, the development process for early intervention modalities must include patient insights. FasterCures' report, The Impact of Insight: Patient Preferences in Novel Screening Technologies for Cancer, highlights nine patient preferences in cancer screening, early detection, and interventions based on our extensive research and engagement with stakeholders, including a focus group of people with lived experience of cancer. The report also offers nine recommendations to guide key stakeholders on how to embed these insights throughout the development of new cancer screening and early intervention modalities. Please read the report and share our report release announcement in this LinkedIn post.

Convenings Recap

Advances in Science Webinar

On August 15, FasterCures and the Future of Aging collaborated on an Advances in Science webinar with featured guest Richard J. Hodes, MD, director of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of Health. Hodes presented NIA's work and notable scientific advances in several areas of Alzheimer's research, including genetics, biomarkers, risk factors, interventions, and clinical studies. He also discussed recent advancements in the growing field of geroscience.

First Cup with FasterCures

On September 6, FasterCures hosted a First Cup discussion with Congressional staffers about health policy priorities for the House and Senate for the remainder of the year. We continue to monitor the status of the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA) reauthorization, Prepare for and Respond to Existing Viruses, Emerging New Threats, and Pandemics Act (PREVENT Pandemics Act), and Pioneering Antimicrobial Subscriptions to End Upsurging Resistance (PASTEUR) Act. First Cup is an invite-only breakfast for policy experts to network and engage with colleagues across sectors in targeted discussions to accelerate biomedical innovation.

Webinar on Venture Philanthropy

On September 8, FasterCures held a webinar for The Research and Acceleration and Innovation Network (TRAIN) members on "Implementing a Dynamic Venture Philanthropy Practice" with speakers from the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research, Cure Duchenne, Brightedge ACS, National Brain Tumor Society, and EB Research Partnership. The presentations offered lessons and best practices that can be modeled by other patient organizations hoping to improve their venture philanthropy investing strategies. A recording of the webinar will be available on our webpage soon.

Webinar about Antimicrobial Resistance

On September 27, FasterCures hosted a webinar on "What's Next for the UK's Subscription Model in the Fight against Antimicrobial Resistance." The webinar included speakers from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and National Health Services England, who discussed lessons from England's pilot and how the UK proposes to implement an antibiotics subscription model. A recording of the webinar will be available on our webpage soon.

Policy Updates: Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act

FasterCures and the Public Health team of MI Health wrote a policy brief about PAHPA. We identified three policy priorities that are core to improving and strengthening the nation's biosecurity and preparedness infrastructure:

  • bolstering the public health infrastructure to optimize US preparedness and emergency response capabilities,

  • strengthening the development and deployment of medical countermeasures, and

  • supporting jurisdictional preparedness and response capacity through the multiple levels of government across the US.

These priorities are also included in our comment letter on the PAPHA discussion draft, as well as comment letters submitted earlier this year to the Senate HELP Committee and House Energy and Commerce Committee.

PAHPA expired on September 30, 2023. Many programs covered by PAHPA have enough funding until November 17, 2023, when the continuing resolution passed by Congress expires, and the budget for the fiscal year 2024 must pass. We will continue to monitor the status of the reauthorization of PAHPA.
