Hyeongyul Roh, PhD

Senior Research Analyst, Research Department

Dr Hyeongyul Roh is a senior Research Analyst specialized in applied economics within the Research Department at the Milken Institute. The core of his research interests is to empirically assess the efficiency of markets and identify optimal economic decisions based on the empirical setting. His recent work focuses on energy industry organization and clean energy policy by employing economic theory and diverse machine learning methods. Specifically, his papers examine how public policies, designed to support renewable energy, drive private sector investments and technological innovations, and how rapidly increasing supply of intermittent wind and solar generation at scale is creating challenges for electricity markets.

Before joining the Institute, Roh was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Duke University Energy Initiative, where he led data-driven research projects and mentored students in exploring machine learning approaches to interdisciplinary challenges in energy markets. Roh holds a PhD in Economics from North Carolina State University and an MS in Mathematical Finance from Boston University.
