Matt Lurie, PhD

Associate Director, Center for Strategic Philanthropy

Dr. Matt Lurie is an associate director at the Milken Institute Center for Strategic Philanthropy. He uses his expertise as a scientist, educator, and policy analyst to lead the center’s advisory work to identify opportunities to deploy philanthropic capital to make a sustainable impact on biodiversity and the environment. In addition, he advises individual philanthropists and family foundations looking for strategic and innovative ways to make an impact through storytelling in film and television.  

Dr. Lurie received a BSc in Marine Biology from the University of California at Los Angeles, followed by an MS and PhD in Botany from the University of Hawaii. As a trained ecologist, he led collaborative research projects focused on plant invasion ecology and conservation in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. He has a passion for science education and has facilitated teacher professional development workshops and co-wrote the online marine science curriculum Exploring Our Fluid Earth. In 2016, as the NOAA Knauss Marine Policy Fellow for the White House National Ocean Council, he strengthening cooperation among Federal, State, and Tribal representatives to help establish the Nation’s first two regional ocean plans in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Dr. Lurie continues to be interested in initiatives and actions that promote environmental stewardship and positive social change.
