The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified pre-existing socioeconomic inequities including lack of access to affordable housing. Nationwide, economic zoning restrictions—along with political resistance from residents—have limited new construction. Social mobility has declined as housing-related costs have soared. However, the prospect of economic recovery presents a chance to address housing shortages while promoting broad-based growth. Development of new units can boost short-term employment and consumer activity as it improves long-term capacity to attract and retain employees. By containing increases in housing costs, communities can alleviate pressures on their most vulnerable members at every stage of life.
