Center for Financial Innovations

Innovative financial technologies that leverage the full spectrum of capital - social, human, environmental and financial - can unlock hidden value and finance the future.

At the Milken Institute, we combine our knowledge of financial instruments with an understanding of risk to devise financial innovations that strengthen the ability of an organization, an industry or even a country to develop ideas and promote growth. We aim to align interests and catalyze concrete solutions that effectively leverage public, private and philanthropic capital.

The Center for Financial Innovations specializes in:

  • applying financial innovations to social, economic and environmental policy challenges.

  • convening Financial Innovations Labs, where leaders in public policy, the business and investment communities, and academic and private-sector researchers target specific challenges. Lab members use case studies to develop financial solutions and provide next steps for their implementation.

  • documenting best practices in innovation across all sectors in research papers, Financial Innovations Lab reports and our Wharton-Milken Institute book series.

The Center has addressed breakthrough strategies in financing efficient food aid delivery, small business development in emerging domestic markets, urban infrastructure, biomedical R&D, alternative energy, post-conflict economic recovery and development in Israel, and insurance risk in catastrophe-prone areas. This work has generated tangible results: a $400 million fund to promote biomedical innovation in Israel, a plan for a data consortium monitoring investment in emerging domestic markets, and an increase in the number and variety of catastrophic risk-management products and investors.
