An outgrowth of consumerism in all aspects of health and health care is the expectation that patients must be a critical partner in the design of solutions intended to improve their health. Today, there are hundreds of patient organizations, each with a wide range of expertise and infrastructure to pursue research and partner with innovators. Their role as the end-user has been catalyzed by the actions of Congress and regulators in redefining patient engagement in research and medical-product innovation. Now it is time to build a system that evolves one-on-one engagements to a scale that can benefit many more.
