China and the US: the Art Market and Cultural Cooperation (Invite only)

According to the recent Art Basel "Art Market" report, the US and China (along with the UK for the moment) are in the lead. The United States' relative ease of cross-border movements of art, with few restrictions on imports and exports, has surely contributed to its strong position, making it the largest art market in the world. China's place is less established, but the trends indicate that its expanding economy is resulting in serious wealth creation. There has been much cultural exchange between the US and China, through the trade of art as well as through the lending of works between major cultural institutions and collectors. Yet, 2018 has also seen tensions and trading hostility between the two nations, the world's largest economies. How do these developments and challenges translate into opportunities for cultural cooperation between the two countries? Can these two highly different economies and culturally distinctive nations find common ground through the language of art and culture?
